Boston’s most popular seafood market has closed after almost 30 years.
Owner and owner of the Massachusetts Market at Boston Fish market, John “Johny” Smith, said he sold his entire business to a private equity firm.
The Boston Fish Markets was a popular source of fresh seafood for Boston and other cities.
The Market is one of the largest seafood markets in the world and sold over 8 million pounds of fish from 2003-2017, according to the Fish Market’s website.
But in January 2017, the Market’s business began to suffer due to the recession and it closed its doors.
Smith said that during the recession, the market was one of many that suffered from a lack of fresh food.
He said he had been able to keep a steady stream of sales and customers but the market struggled to keep up with demand.
Smith went to the local Boston Market board to express his concerns about the closure and they said they could not help.
Smith decided to sell his business to an investment group that owns a grocery store in Dorchester.
The investment group has been in the market for about a year.
They say they will continue to operate the Market.
Smith and the Boston Market will be closing its doors for good sometime in 2019.
